1) What inspired this piece?
I was inspired by the movie House of Flying Daggers, directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Andy Lau.
2) Why did you give it that title?
The shot of the movie that this is drawn from is the scene where the two lovers part.
3) Did you use a photo reference or model?
I found a screenshot of this scene, which I think is one of the most visceral and emotional scenes of the entire film.
4) Is there a story or message in this piece
This scene in the movie is the moment when Mei is deciding her future. If she follows her love, she knows there will be deadly consequences that will part them anyway. If she doesn’t follower her lover, she will never see him again and she will continue on as she is for the rest of her days, which are also numbered. In this scene, the lovers are heartbroken. In the next scene, she will take a leap towards her love. Take the leap for who and what you love!
5) Any other thoughts?
The entire film is an absolute visual masterpiece! The soundtrack is likewise a masterpiece that plays perfectly with and heightens the visuals. Well worth the watch!
