1) What inspired this piece?
Langs-Mello and his photography.
2) Why did you give it that title?
That is the name of the model.
3) Did you use a photo reference or model?
Yes. I referenced a portrait of David Torres by Langs-Mello. You can view the original photograph here: https://langs-mello.deviantart.com/art/Stylish-IX-BW-322659092
4) Is there a story or message in this piece
Always keep smiling! The human brain is wired to look for negativity – it feeds into our natural survival instinct. However, negative thinking doesn’t let us enjoy life. Re-train your brain by looking a the positive every day. Soon, you won’t have to fake a smile – it will be genuine!
5) Any other thoughts?
I really love how Langs-Mello originally shot only half of his model’s smiling face. It really adds extra deviousness to his expression, as well as a little bit of mystery. I also love drawing with charcoal, and b&w photography gives me a great excuse to work with it!
