1) What
inspired this piece?
A
photograph of a zebra. I loved the optical illusion of the animal’s hide.
Sometimes you can’t make out the head and eyes from the rest of the body.
2) Why did
you give it that title?
The
particular picture I referenced had an almost sad quality. It made me feel like
the zebra was purposely hiding.
3) Did you
use a photo reference or model?
Yes, I
referenced a picture by the photographer’s permission. Unfortunately, I have since
lost track of the source and sadly cannot give credit at this time.
4) Is
there a story or message in this piece?
I hoped
that it would reach out to anyone who felt that they wanted to hide among their
stripes. I was rather insecure when I was in school, and I always just wanted
to blend in with my surroundings. Not anymore. I like having the stripes that
stand out now. I hope to encourage anyone who feels less about themselves than
they should to believe that they are beautiful and to take pride in their own unique stripes.
After all, they say that every zebra has a pattern unique unto themselves – like
our own fingerprints. Celebrate your unique qualities; don’t try to hide them
and blend in.
5) Any
other thoughts?
Don’t zebras look awesome?
